Sides of the War


The Peloponnesian war was fought by Athens and the Athenian Empire verses Sparta and its allies Thebes and Corinth. Athens was a large naval power and Sparta relied on its army for strength and support. These to powers went to war with each other in 431 BC. This conflict was named after Peloponnesus, the peninsula where Sparta is located. The Peloponnesian War lasted for 27 years.

Athens was the main democratic center of Greedce at the time.It was known for its large navy. A Philosopher, external image pericles%5B1%5D.jpgThucydides, described a plague that occurred during the time of the Peloponnesian War, affecting Athens for years. It is said the plague killed many Athenians and even their military leader, Pericles.

Sparta, and their allies in 431 BC

Sparta had a large, tough army and considered itself way better than its rival Athens. Spartans were fierce at birth and trained to become military greatness. Sparta's main ally was the city-state Corinth.
